Referring to cleaning as an "art" probably caused an impromptu snicker to escape your otherwise serious expression. If you're like me, and if you're honest--it would be accurate to say you classify housecleaning as an uninteresting hobby. However, if you're conscientious about homemaking, no doubt you already have a cleaning routine. I would like to add something I ran across that describes what most of us do (when we DO clean) which is called "cleaning in layers".
It sounds like something complex and hard to do. However, the art of cleaning in layers is quite simple, adding one or two additional jobs to your regular cleaning routine. Here. Let's look at a process and help you better understand the cleaning-in-layers concept.
Similar to the top cleaning tips found on HGTV, cleaning in layers allows you to better organize cleaning, as to build momentum, as well as maximum long-term results.
Most clean according to a schedule. For example, weekdays are out, except for retirees; therefore, weekends are times when most families do major housecleaning. On the other hand, cleaning in layers helps you get more done within the same amount of time, without tiring yourself out.

Here is an example of housecleaning layering:
Layer One
This layer covers everyday jobs like washing the dishes, sweeping the floors, emptying the trash, making the beds, general picking up (of toys, clothes, etc.). Doing these chores in a single-level, three-bedroom home takes about an hour and thirty minutes, depending on the size of the family.
Layer Two
These tasks are done once or twice a week: dusting furniture, cleaning toilet, wiping down bathroom, cleaning garbage pails, watering the plants, and vacuuming.
Layer Three
These are once-a-week deep cleaning chores: cleaning the refrigerator, changing bed linens, scrubbing floors, polishing furniture. You can set aside five or six hours to do all these jobs in one day or add one deep cleaning job to your list of layer-one tasks each day. Adding one of these chores to your everyday tasks is recommended, depending on work schedules, making dinner, and helping kids with homework.
Layer Four
This layer includes special projects like cleaning the oven, polishing the silver, cleaning the screens and storm windows, washing summer and winter blankets, washing walls, washing windows and the woodwork.
For this layer you can set aside two hours of fixed time a week for these jobs; or you can add each one of them to another layer of cleaning jobs as they come up. You'll find that cleaning in layers of designated cleaning guarantees thorough weekly house cleaning.
